I'm at a stage in my career where I know who I am and what I want. I'm constantly seeking knowledge, guidance, experience from others...Have you ever worked with another artist, a teacher or mentor of sorts where you could feed ideas off each other but still be your own person? Create your own way but in a new light. There seems to be an aha moment for me when I am listening to my new friend/mentor, Carl. He'll be talking about a story or creating a story and then one word will take me back to a particular experience I've had that I want to recreate on canvas or sculpt.
Today was my first day working with Carl at his gallery/studio. We only met a week ago when my husband and I walked into his gallery. I've seen his work before and knew of him, but there was a sign in his window that prompted me to be braver than I normally am. He was looking for an intern/mentorship. This intrigued me and led to an hour long conversation about art. One of my most favorite subjects in the world to talk about. By the end of our first meet, I was excited to work with this energetic, artistic person whom I only just met. We exchanged cards and left it at that. On Monday I stopped in to clarify what exactly it was that Carl was looking for in an intern or with this mentor relationship and by the end of that conversation I was even more excited to work with him...
Today was the first day we actually talked, sketched and painted! My brain is on overload right now trying to process all that was said throughout the day. Some things I'll remember instantly and try to come to my own understanding or interpretations, others will have to surface in time.
I can't tell you how excited I am for this new chapter with my art. I have so many ideas running through my head and goals that I'm aiming for...
Have you ever had a mentor or interned anywhere? I'd love to hear your stories! Please share!
